In advertising the three-volume series, the publishers wrote in 1834:Despite the Venerable Hokusais numerous publications and their wide popularity, they have never really satisfied the Master. . . .In these volumes, however, the Master has traveled the Provinces, sought out strange scenes and fine views . . . encompassing their true forms in these rare miniatures. . . . As the Master himself recounts, The true essence of my art lies in these albums.Hokusais fondness for tenderly depicting the humor of people engaged in everyday activities is unrestrained in these two-tone compositions.
