Is it a real bird?

Sorry about the English, but I can't write well in Japanese. Actually came here from Keene's translation mentioned in the article. My objective was to find out what kind of bird it was. I thought there was an actual bird, but from this Wikipedia page I now think it might be mythical. That would also explain the lack of a corresponding English article?
